Laboratory Equipment Services

Laboratory Equipment Preventive Maintenance

Planned preventive maintenance that helps keep critical laboratory equipment operating reliably and reduces unplanned downtime.

Why preventive maintenance matters for lab equipment

Skipping scheduled maintenance is a gamble: an unexpected failure can ruin samples, delay projects and cost far more than planned service. Preventive maintenance keeps laboratory instruments accurate, safe and dependable by finding worn parts and performance drift before they become breakdowns. MedRun provides preventive maintenance for supported laboratory equipment, and we confirm scope for your make and model before work begins.

Benefits of scheduled preventive maintenance

  • Less unplanned downtime: wear and drift are caught before they cause a failure
  • Schedules matched to how and when each instrument is used
  • Inspection, cleaning and replacement of wear parts
  • Performance checks against specification
  • Service records that make audits and inspections easier
  • Can be combined with calibration, verification and repair for one plan and predictable costs

Preventive maintenance vs. equipment verification: understanding the difference

Preventive maintenance

A true PM requires disassembly, or at minimum vacuuming dust from the unit components. A verification is performed after each PM service.

  • System is disassembled and cleaned
  • Maintenance parts are replaced
  • Bearings, junctions and pivots are lubricated
  • Electrical safety and conformity tests
  • Equipment verification

Equipment verification

Verification and calibration should be performed before and after a repair to confirm the system was and still is running to manufacturer specifications. Some industry standards call for a six-month verification.

  • System is tested for conformity
  • Basic functions are tested
  • All electronics are verified
  • Temperature and RPM are tested
  • Quality documentation

Shakers and incubators: a full cleaning and lubrication matters because they sit on the floor next to walkways, and dust build-up can cause a system to fail. Centrifuges: cleaning and lubricating joints improves performance, while a dirty unit leads to sample contamination and long-term damage. PCR systems: dust accumulation is a leading cause of failure, so a full cleaning is performed during every preventive maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

What is preventive maintenance for lab equipment?

Preventive maintenance (PM) is scheduled service performed before a failure occurs: inspection, cleaning, lubrication, replacement of wear parts and performance checks that keep instruments accurate and reliable.

Why is preventive maintenance important for laboratories?

Regular PM helps catch worn parts and performance drift early, reduces unplanned downtime and failed experiments, extends equipment life and provides service records for audits.

How often should lab equipment receive preventive maintenance?

Intervals depend on the instrument, how heavily it is used and the manufacturer or quality-system requirements. Many labs service critical equipment at least annually. MedRun can help set a schedule for supported equipment.

Can preventive maintenance be combined with calibration and repair?

Yes. PM can be paired with calibration, verification, repair and qualification so your equipment is serviced and documented in one visit or plan.

Which equipment does preventive maintenance cover?

Coverage depends on manufacturer and model. Contact MedRun with your equipment details to confirm whether your system is supported.

Is documentation provided?

Documentation is provided for supported services so you have a record for your quality system or audits.

Do you serve laboratories outside California?

MedRun supports key U.S. markets, and Eppendorf epMotion systems are supported nationwide. See our service areas for details.
